Access, Parking Bláfjöll
The Bláfjöll ski resort lies in southwestern Iceland in the Bláfjöll Mountains. The mountain range is also known as the Blue Mountains. It is only about 30 km from the capital of Reykjavík. You take Highway 1 from Reykjavík to the turn off for Bláfjöll. This mountain road goes up about 12 km to the parking lots of the ski resort. There are usually enough parking spaces available (free of charge). However, during the winter, the parking lots are usually completely iced over. You can also travel to the ski resort from Hafnarfjörður on Route 417. However, this road is not cleared and the conditions can be bad. This road should be avoided during the winter. Tire spikes are usually required due to the icy conditions in Iceland. The rental car agencies only rent cars with spikes in the winter. Without spikes, it would not be possible to get to the ski resort.
Route 417 from Hafnarfjörður is not cleared in the winter. It is open, but you travel at your own risk.
