Gastronomy tip
Restaurant Ainkehr
At the base station of the Aineckbahn lift on the Katschberghöhe.
The gourmet ski hut on the Katschberg has an exclusive wine cellar with fines wines from all over the world, a cheese cellar including some self-produced varieties and a meat curing cabinet. Diners can look forward to 30 different cheese varieties from Carinthia, the Bregenz Forest, Lech Valley and Friaul.
Stamperl Katschberg
At the base station of the Gamskogelexpress on the Katschberghöhe at 1,670 metres
The Stamperl Katschberg is home to the "Katschbeer” brewery. This is the highest brewery in Austria and brews 1,000 litres of beer each day. The Stamperl serves regional cuisine and international classics in a cosy and rustic atmosphere. A bar-brewery with a view of the brewing kettles adds the finishing touch. The large sun terrace is an inviting place to sit in fine weather.
Mountain hut tip
Gamskogelhütte
At 1,850 metres, on the Gamskogel slope
This cosy ski hut with a very large sun terrace serves a wide selection of Carinthian specialities made with regional and organically produced ingredients. All dishes are freshly prepared at the hut. The Gamskogelhütte is located directly on the Carinthian/Salzburg border. Bread is prepared in Carinthia and baked in Salzburg. It also offers toboggan evenings twice a week (and every evening during the school holidays) on a floodlit toboggan run. Probably the highest registry office in Austria is located at the Gamskogelhütte. The Marienkapelle chapel is right next door.
Gipfelrestaurant Adlerhorst
At the peak of the Aineck
Fascinating view from the sun terrace - from the Nock Mountains to the Hohe Tauern. You can enjoy a view of one-fifth of Austria from the Aineck.
Pritzhütte
A tip located a bit off the beaten path: a 4 kilometre hike (1 hour, leisurely pace) takes you to the rustic Pritzhütte in the Gontal conservation area on the Katschberg.
In winter, you can travel up to the Pritzhütte on a romantic horse-drawn sleigh or take the environmentally friendly Katschberg Biolift: an experienced ski instructor guides you from the Tschaneck over an ungroomed ski route to the Pritzhütte and you then take the Biolift back to the Katschberghöhe (skiers hang on to ropes behind a horse-drawn sleigh).
