Environmental friendliness of the ski resort Nebelhorn – Oberstdorf

The MyMountainNature initiative reflects the Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen lift company’s great concern for the issue of sustainability. The entire ski resort of Nebelhorn uses 100% environmentally friendly hydraulic power. The lifts on the Nebelhorn even have their own hydraulic power station at the middle station of the Nebelhornbahn lift which provides environmentally friendly energy. The hydraulic power station supplies approximately as much electricity as the Nebelhornbahn lift consumes. Sustainable and ecological construction was an important focus for the renovation of the Nebelhornbahn lift in 2021. In comparison to a mono-cable gondola lift, the bi-cable system consumes less energy and requires fewer supports. The transparent station halls are flooded with natural daylight which reduces energy requirements for lighting. The buildings in the valley are heated by a water heat pump using ground water. The slope management system is very environmentally friendly. As well as guaranteeing perfect slopes, the satellite-supported snow depth measurement system in the snowcats ensures precise snow distribution. This reduces the volume of snow that needs to be produced. The required energy is saved and the snow melts faster. The grass can recover sooner and turf is protected during the ski season. Travel by public transport is strongly promoted in Oberstdorf which encourages visitors to “Leave traffic jams behind and enjoy your holiday right from the start. Take the train - fast, environmentally friendly and value for money.” Free local ski buses provide easy access to the ski resort.
