The area around Ruka and Kuusamo is a paradise for cross-country skiers. The cross-country trails can be used free of charge and lead around the summit of Ruka and all the way to Kuusamo. Around 40 kilometres of cross-country trails are floodlit daily from 7 am until 9 pm. Since 2002, the cross-country ski and Nordic combination opening events of the World Cup have been held in Ruka and Kuusamo.
