The ski resort of Whakapapa is one of the largest ski areas in New Zealand. The winter sports resort is located below the Te Heuheu (2,755 metres) and Paretetaitonga (2,751 metres) peaks. It extends from Happy Valley up to Knoll Ridge and all the way to the Far West T-bar at 2,300 metres. At 2,797 metres, Mount Ruapehu is the highest volcano in New Zealand and the highest point on the North Island.
