Willingen is home to the German cross-country legend, Jochen Behle. The ex-Bundestrainer currently works as the Sport Director of the West German and Hessian Ski Association and is also responsible for the biathletes, ski jumpers and the Nordic combination skiers. There is even a ski boarding school for young athletes. The infrastructure has been built accordingly. In addition to the 48 km of cross-country trails in Willingen, there are also 19,5 km in Usseln, 6 km in Schwalefeld, 15 km in Rattlar, and 14.5 km in Eimelrod. The snow reliable Hochheide trail can be accessed from the mountain station of the Ettelsberg cable car lift via a 0.9 km long feeder lift.
