Lifts/cable cars Zugspitze

The ski resort on the Zugspitze is linked by two modern 6-person chairlifts with weather-protection covers and by several tow lifts.

From Germany, the fast, comfortable and panoramic Zugspitze cable car is generally used for the ascent up to the Zugspitze. It starts at the Eibsee lake near Grainau. From Ehrwald in Austria, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car also takes you up to the summit. On Germany’s highest mountain, you can enjoy an impressive 360° panoramic view of more than 400 peaks in 4 countries. From the summit, you take the Gletscherbahn lift for 200 vertical metres up to the ski resort on the Zugspitzplatt plateau.

The alternative is to take the cog railway. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn train starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and takes you up to the Zugspitzplatt plateau in 75 minutes. It stops along the way at Hausberg, Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau and Eibsee.

The Zugspitze cable car is a superlative cable car which broke three world records when it opened in 2017: the world's tallest support tower of 127 metres, the world's largest total height difference of 1,945 metres in one section and the world’s longest free span of 3,213 metres.
